Description

This handcrafted Blue and White Underglaze Red Pear-shaped Vase with Interlocking Lotus Pattern is inspired by the timeless Yuhuchun vase form, a classic shape that originated during the Song Dynasty. Characterized by its gently flared mouth, slender neck, rounded pear-shaped body, and stable ring foot, the Yuhuchun vase has long been admired as one of the most elegant vessel designs in traditional Chinese porcelain.

The decoration employs the highly regarded blue and white underglaze red technique. Cobalt oxide is used to create the blue motifs, while copper-based pigment forms the underglaze red details. Because these two pigments react differently during firing, achieving balanced colors in a single kiln firing requires exceptional craftsmanship and precise temperature control, making this process one of the most technically demanding in Jingdezhen porcelain production.

Decorative Design & Symbolism

The decorative layout follows the refined standards of Qing Dynasty official kiln porcelain.

  • The neck is ornamented with traditional upturned banana leaf patterns, adding visual rhythm and elegance.

  • The main body showcases flowing interlocking lotus scrolls, accompanied by lotus petal borders and delicate scrolling grass motifs around the lower section.

In Chinese culture, the interlocking lotus represents endless vitality, lasting prosperity, and continuous good fortune. Meanwhile, the lotus flower symbolizes purity, integrity, and the noble virtues of a gentleman. Together, these traditional motifs create a composition that is both visually harmonious and rich in cultural significance.

Historical Inspiration & Decorative Value

This vase is reproduced with reference to official kiln wares from the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, preserving the elegant proportions, decorative composition, and understated color palette characteristic of imperial porcelain.

Suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors, it complements:

  • Neo-Chinese entrance halls

  • Tea rooms

  • Living room display cabinets

  • Antique shelves

  • Cultural exhibition spaces

Its artistic appearance and auspicious symbolism also make it an excellent choice for porcelain collectors, cultural gifts, business presentations, and housewarming occasions.

Key Difference

Blue and white underglaze red porcelain is completed through a single high-temperature underglaze firing, whereas traditional doucai porcelain requires separate underglaze and overglaze firing stages. This difference makes underglaze red porcelain considerably more challenging to produce.

Product Description

This handcrafted decorative porcelain vase is produced in Jingdezhen using the classic Yuhuchun silhouette. Every decorative element is painted entirely by hand, featuring elegant blue and white underglaze red interlocking lotus scrolls inspired by Qing Dynasty official kiln masterpieces.

The decoration presents soft underglaze colors with well-balanced layering and clean brushwork. Combining traditional craftsmanship with oriental aesthetics, the vase serves not only as an attractive interior decoration but also as a collectible porcelain artwork suitable for tea rooms, studies, entrance halls, and antique display cabinets.

For centuries, the Yuhuchun vase has symbolized nobility, sincerity, and remaining true to one's original aspirations. The continuously connected lotus vines express uninterrupted prosperity and enduring vitality, while the lotus flower itself represents honesty and moral character. The graceful combination of cobalt blue and auspicious underglaze red further conveys wishes for harmony, peace, refined taste, and lasting happiness.

This design is modeled after the famous blue and white underglaze red interlocking lotus Yuhuchun vase produced during the Yongzheng reign. At that time, underglaze red technology reached remarkable maturity, resulting in delicate decorative lines, balanced color coordination, and elegant artistic compositions. Our craftsmen carefully reinterpret these historical characteristics to suit today's appreciation of traditional Chinese interiors.

Craftsmanship Highlights

Blue and White Underglaze Red Technique

The decorative patterns combine cobalt blue with copper red beneath a transparent glaze. Both pigments mature during a single firing at approximately 1300°C, requiring extremely accurate temperature control. The low production yield has made this decorative technique highly valued throughout Chinese porcelain history.

Fully Hand-Thrown Porcelain Body

Every vase begins with carefully selected kaolin clay before being hand-thrown and professionally trimmed. The finished body displays graceful curves and harmonious proportions that faithfully recreate the traditional Yuhuchun profile.

Entirely Hand-Painted Decoration

From the banana leaf borders around the neck to the interlocking lotus scrolls and lotus petal motifs, every decorative section is painted manually. Natural brushstroke variations distinguish each vase from machine-made transfer-printed ceramics, giving every piece its own artistic character.

Traditional Antique Glaze

A specially formulated glaze recreates the warm, jade-like appearance associated with antique Jingdezhen porcelain. Rather than producing an overly glossy surface, the glaze develops a soft luster that enhances the depth of both blue and red decorations.

Collection Value

Blue and white underglaze red porcelain has long been regarded as one of the most technically demanding categories in Jingdezhen ceramics. The traditional saying, "Nine out of ten kiln firings fail," reflects the difficulty of achieving successful underglaze red coloration.

This vase faithfully follows the decorative standards of Qing Dynasty official kiln porcelain while maintaining genuine hand-painted craftsmanship. Unlike transfer-printed decorative ceramics, every piece displays natural artistic variation, making each vase unique. Combining historical inspiration with authentic Jingdezhen production techniques, it offers lasting decorative appeal as well as meaningful collection value, making it suitable for both new and experienced porcelain enthusiasts.

Care Instructions

Because porcelain is fragile, careful handling is recommended.

  • Always support the vase from the bottom with both hands when moving it.

  • Avoid lifting the vase solely by the rim.

  • Remove dust regularly using a soft, dry cotton cloth.

  • Do not use steel wool or highly corrosive cleaning agents.

  • Keep the vase away from prolonged direct sunlight and strong air-conditioning airflow to help preserve the glaze.

  • If fresh flowers are displayed, replace the water regularly. Long-term standing water may leave mineral deposits inside the vase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Is the decoration completely hand-painted?

Yes. Every decorative pattern is painted entirely by hand. Slight variations in brushwork and color intensity are natural characteristics of genuine handmade porcelain and should not be considered defects.

Q2. Will every vase have exactly the same underglaze red color?

No. Copper-based underglaze red is extremely sensitive to firing temperature and kiln atmosphere. Minor color differences naturally occur, even among pieces fired in the same kiln, making every handcrafted vase unique.

Q3. Can the vase be used for long-term flower arrangements?

It is primarily designed as decorative porcelain. While short-term flower arrangements are acceptable, continuous water storage is not recommended because mineral deposits may gradually develop inside the vase.

Q4. Is this vase suitable as a gift?

Absolutely. With its elegant appearance and auspicious symbolism, it is an ideal choice for housewarming celebrations, business gifts, cultural exchanges, and collectible presents. Premium gift box packaging is available upon request.
